The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has increased its vigil on the progress of maintenance work on roads. After the BMC scrapped third party auditors following the massive roads work scam, civic engineers will be inspecting roads where work is in progress or is complete.

At present, 1,773 roads in the city are being worked on, of which 445 are in progress and 1,166 are balance road work. The deadline for the BMC to complete the road work is May 31.

As per the list accessed by DNA, work on 1,172 roads are under Priority-II list of BMC's Roads Department. Of the 1,172 roads, 272 are in the island city, 433 in eastern suburbs, and 467 in western suburbs. As on March 12, across the city, work on 390 roads is in progress, and 762 are yet to start.

The BMC also has a Priority-III list, under which there are 337 roads. These apart, there are 262 projects roads listed for completion by 2018-19.

In 2017, the BMC had had a tough time meeting its target for road repair work across the city as the quarries in Navi Mumbai, which provide stones for the same, were shut.

Vivek Kalyankar, Deputy Chief Engineer, Roads, said, "This year, there's no issue with supply from quarries, so we will be able to meet our target. Also, with third party auditors getting scrapped, civic sub-engineers will be inspecting the progress to prevent shoddy work."
