To prepare for the monsoons, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is all set to fumigate over 2,500 under-construction sites across the city. Construction sites are known to be mosquito breeding grounds and they add to the mosquito menace in the city.

A proposal regarding the same has already been cleared by the civic standing committee and the Insecticide Control department of the BMC. It will start in a fortnight.

According to officials from the Insecticide department, across Mumbai, there are around 2,605 under- construction sites, which the civic body will fumigate on priority basis. "As part of the monsoon preparation, a fumigation programme will commence to prevent chances of spread of mosquito-borne diseases such as Malaria and Dengue," said a senior official from the department.

Apart from construction sites, the BMC officials will also start vising residential as well as commercial buildings to look for possible mosquito larvae spots. "We have decided to appoint NGOs to make rounds and issue notices wherever the larvae is found," said the official.

As per data available with the BMC, In 2017, the civic body had issued notices to around 17,800 individuals, of whom, prosecuted 2,100 were fined.

This year, the BMC has set aside around Rs 19 crore for hiring volunteers to check dengue larvae infestation and fumigation works.

However, they have also decided to bring down the frequency of fumigation. "Instead of increasing the frequency, we have decided to concentrate on cleanliness," said Dr Rajan Naringrekar, chief insecticide officer of BMC. He added that excess use of fumigation affects health.

Around two years back, the BMC had only 28 fumigation vehicles. They now have 227 vehicles, one for each ward.
