Being the implementing agency for the plastic ban, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is not only responsible for collecting the existing stock of plastic lying with citizens but is also liable to dispose and recycle the collected plastic appropriately. The BMC has decided to handover the recycling of the collected plastic to the recycling agencies registered with the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). According to a senior official from MPCB, there are around 50 such agencies in Mumbai that can recycle the plastic collected by BMC.

As per the official, recycling is not the only option but the collected plastic can also be used by cement industries to mix the plastic with cement in their manufacturing units.

"There are around 85 locations in the city where plastic collection bins have been placed. The locations include all solid waste management chowkis, municipal markets and other public locations. For plastic bottles, crushing machines will be installed across the city for which the locations are yet to be finalised," said Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, A ward.

"The collected plastic will be stored in the dry waste segregation centers and it will be collected from here by the registered recycling agencies," added Dighavkar. According to the MPCB official, there are over 400 registered agencies with MPCB of which 40 to 50 are in Mumbai and around 70 outside Mumbai.

The plastic ban has to be implemented by June 23 and the BMC has pulled up its socks for the steps to be taken for its effective implementation. The major part of the process is collecting the plastic stored in households and ways to dispose it. The BMC will also be starting a helpline number and awareness campaigns. After that, the civic body has to also provide alternatives to plastic to the public.
