In order to make to implementation of Swachch Bharat Abhiyan more effective, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to enlighten residents on disposal of waste as refuse.
As part of this effort, it has appealed to residents to seek its services, the corporation's solid waste management department will apprise them on ways to dispose refuse at source.
The corporation has given the responsibility of spreading awareness to its special executive officer Seema Redkar.
"We want people to take part in the Abhiyan. One way they can contribute is by segregating waste at source. The dry refuse generated can be recycled and save public money of transporting it to dump yards. Wet waste can be used for producing manure. Our effort is intended at making people understand how they can adopt methods to dispose waste at source, ie at their premises," an official from solid waste management department said, requesting anonymity.
The official added that composting and installing biogas system are the ways in which garbage disposal can be done. According to the corporation, around 150 housing societies and 1,200 families in the city have installed the biogas system. "Any society that wants the plan can seek help from the department. This will help us maintain ecology," the official said.
BMC has been implementing the Abhiyan launched by the Centre since October 2.
