The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has pulled up its socks for pre-monsoon activities, including completion of all road works. Currently, 510 road works are in progress, and the BMC has to complete these by May 31 to make all the roads motorable. However, the deadline can be extended till June 10. In May last year, quarries in Navi Mumbai, which supply material for road work, were shut, due to which the BMC has to struggle to complete road works before monsoon.

"Since there is a stay by National Green Tribunal, the quarries in Thane district are shut. But this year, the contractors are getting the materials from quarries in Raigad district. There is no shortage of construction this year and we are confident of completing all road works by June 10," said Deputy Chief Engineer (Roads), Vivek Kalyankar.

As of April 16, as per data provided by BMC, the Roads department has 51 priority II and 58 priority III road works in progress. Combining both priority II and III, the highest road works are going on in the western suburbs, with 67 roads dug up; followed by the island city area with 28 roads dug up and eastern suburbs with 14 roads dug up.

Also, 410 roads are dug up for old and new road projects, of which 187 are in the western suburbs, followed by 131 works in eastern suburbs and 109 in island city area.

The BMC is also desilting drains (cleaning of nullas) and trimming trees as part of pre-monsoon work. Because of lack of proper desilting and trimming of trees, the BMC had received a lot criticism last monsoon. The civic body has a total of 272 kilometres of major nullas — in the island city, eastern and western suburbs — to be cleaned. For tree trimming, the gardens' department has received around 15,000 proposals, which the civic body has to complete before the rains hit the city. Last monsoon, the BMC received a lot of flak when Mumbai witnessed floods on August 29. The city had also witnessed four deaths due to tree collapse.
