The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has successfully appointed nearly 57 contractors for desilting works, which will begin from April 1. This has come as a relief to the corporation, which had earlier struggled to appoint contractors for the same. Desilting involves cleaning nullahs ahead of monsoon in order to allow smooth drainage of water, which plays a major role in preventing water-logging during rainy season.

Last year, in the backdrop of desilting scam, the Storm Water Drains (SWD) department had failed to appoint even a single contractor for the works. The department was compelled to seek help of non-government organisation  (NGOs) for the same. “This year we are not depending on transport section. We have appointed contractors ourselves. We are hopeful that all work is completed before monsoon and maximum water logging is prevented,” said V Khandkar, chief engineer, SWD, BMC. On August 29 last year, Mumbai had come to a standstill due to water-logging during heavy rain.

Mumbai’s western suburb accounts for 18 SWD systems, which is the highest. This is followed by eastern suburb, which has six systems while the island city has three. SWD systems are identified locations where major nullas are connected to small ones and face water-logging.

In western suburbs, major catchment (water-logged) locations are Andheri east and west, Kherwadi, Bharat Nagar, Jogeshwari, Santacruz and Khar among others. Eastern suburbs have Kurla, Sakinaka, Mulund, Bhandup and others.

The deadline for carrying out desilting is May 31.
