The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is in the process of appointing a private contractor to keep Girgaum Chowpatty clean.

According to officials from the solid waste management department, the civic body has invited tenders estimated to be Rs 3.76 crore for comprehensive management of cleanliness at Girgaum Chowpatty. The BMC is likely to issue work orders for it soon.

“Apart from the manual cleaning, the contract work also includes use of beach-cleaning machines, tractor-trolly, litter bins and garbage collection vehicles,” said a senior civic official, adding that the contract period is for seven years.

He said the main reason behind dirty beaches is the throwing of waste by visitors. “Since it attracts huge visitors, they throw waste on the beach, on the roadside drains,” added the official.

MS Ghadge, chief engineer of the solid waste management department, said, “We are also looking at the Goa model of beach safety and cleanliness.”

The BMC will appoint a contractor for Juhu beach soon, he added.
