The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will issue Aadhar cards, along with birth certificates, to newborns, starting September 1.

The project will ensure that each of the 78,000-odd children born in municipal hospitals will be registered and given Unique Identification (UID) numbers.

A pilot project, carried out at the civic-run Sion Hospital, turned out to be extremely successful. "We will now implement this project in three major and 16 peripheral hospitals run by BMC," said a senior doctor from Sion Hospital.

The most important aspect of the project is that when the child becomes an adult, he or she can again give the thumb impression and other details for a permanent document. They will not need to apply for fresh Aadhar cards.
"Even if the parents do not name the child, they can make an addition later. However, the UID will have a mention of the child's gender," said the doctor.

"The health department staff will try to give the UID number as soon as the child is born. The maximum time will be three days, until the mother and the newborn are under the care of the hospital," said Sanjay Deshmukh, additional municipal commissioner.

Deshmukh said that the pilot project at Sion Hospital was extremely successful. Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta has also given a go- ahead to the project.

"Aadhar cards of newborns will be linked with the Aadhar cards of their parents. The cards will have the photos of parents, too. At least 78,000 births take place every year in the city's municipal hospitals. This will reduce the burden of the UID cell in future, and, every year, at least this section of the population will be taken care of," said Deshmukh.

The city witnesses 1.80 lakh births every year, out of which 78,000 are born in civic-run hospitals and maternity homes.
