In what seems to be a deliberate move to avoid discussions on road works costing hefty amounts, the BMC's standing committee on Wednesday proposed to carry out works costing Rs600 crore.

The move to table the proposals pertaining to road improvement and filling trenches, however, was foiled by members of opposition parties. The proposals regarding filling of trenches cost Rs350 crore, while that of roads concretization were worth Rs250 crore.

Add to this, a proposal worth Rs50 crore for installing furniture at Cooper Medical College was also tabled before members, which got approved by them.

As per normal business practice, members of the committee, which takes decisions over financial issues in the civic body, are made available copies of the proposals three days in the run up to the meeting day.

The corporation, however, tabled the proposals on the day of the meeting as urgent business, inviting the ire of opposition parties.

"We received eight proposals a few hours before the meeting. This shows that there is something fishy. There was a deliberate attempt to bypass discussions. The experience of trenches filling works has been poor. Public money is being splurged. Hence, we vehemently opposed the proposals," said opposition leader Devendra Amberkar.

The opposition also objected to the corporation considering names of private players (Relcon Infraprojects and Vitrag Constructions) for carrying out road concretization works in K-West (Santa Cruz, Andheri) and R-South (Kandivli, Borivli) wards.

"If the firm was black listed by Kolhapur Municipal Corporation, how can the BMC consider the agency for works in Mumbai? The administration says they had sought the opinion of the legal department in this case, but it does not hide the fact the agency is a black listed one," added Amberkar.

House leader and Shiv Sena corporator Trushna Vishwasrao, however, demanded the proposal be cleared in view of expediting works.

The opposition members objected to her demand and have now sought a week's time to study the proposals before making a decision in this regard.

Responding to the concerns, committee chairman Yashodhar Phanase announced the proposals were 'not taken'.
