With an aim to spread awareness about the health issues pertaining to contaminated water in Kurla, the medical health department of BMC's L ward has started setting up medical check-up camps, testing water samples, and conducting surveys in different parts of the area.

Since last week, many residents in Kurla have been suffering from mild diarrhoea due to contaminated water supply from the civic body. The areas which are highly affected in Kurla West include Azad Galli, Swadeshi Mill, Kapadia Nagar, Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, and Takiya Ward.

According to the BMC's health department records, the number of diarrhoea cases are high in Swadeshi Mill (81 residents affected), Kapadia Nagar (60 residents affected), and Takiya Ward (60 residents affected).

The civic body has started spreading awareness about diarrhoea from April 8 in the affected areas. Speaking about the medicines provided by the civic body, Medical Health Officer, Dr Avinash Waydande, said, "We are distributing metrogyl tablet, metrogyl syrup, zinc syrup, and ORS to every family. We have also started health talks by conducting society meetings in different areas like Chunabhatti, LBS Marg, Takiya Ward."

Fifteen water samples have been taken so far for testing but the source of contamination is yet to be detected by water department.

"Over 4,000 chlorine tablets have been distributed during the door-to-door survey," he added.

Baitullah Khan, resident of Kapadia Nagar, said, "The water department team had visited our society today to check the pipelines through which water is sourced in the area. Over 250 residents visited the medical check-up camps."
