The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a show-cause notice to the Mumbai Education Trust, which is run by NCP minister Chhagan Bhujbal’s family, for misusing the playground given to them for maintenance in Bandra Reclamation.

The residents have complained to the civic body, stating that MET plans to hold a cultural programme at the General AK Vaidya playground in Bandra Reclamation. The BMC had handed over the 9,195sqmt playground to the trust for maintenance, as per a high court order.

“Although the trust is maintaining the playground very well, they can’t organise cultural events on it. It is in violation with the agreement between BMC and the trust,” said Tushar Aphale, divisional president of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, who along with the residents complained to BMC.

Officials from the H (W) ward office said the playground can be used only for sports-related activities. “The organising of a cultural programme at the playground is a violation of the agreement. So, the notice has been issued asking them for an explanation,” said a senior official, requesting anonymity.

Prashant Sapkale, assistant commissioner of H (W) ward confirmed the news. “We have asked them to file a reply within 24 hours,” said Sapkale.

However, authorities from MET said that they haven’t received any such notice from the civic body. “I am unaware of any such notice being issued by the BMC to us. However, we will abide by the high court order. We haven’t come across any issue raised by the residents,” said Asish Srivastava from MET.

Regarding the cultural programme, he said, “We are organising an awards function on February 9 to felicitate our students who have played at the national and international level and made the organisation proud.”
