The B ward of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which has under its fold Masjid, Sandhurst Road, Dongri, Mohammad Ali Road and Yusuf Mehar Ali Road neighbourhoos, has decided to promote bio-digester toilets in its ward that will benefit residents and housing societies which do not have permission to construct toilets above the ground floor.

As per the BMC, residents cannot construct toilets above ground floor if there is no toilet on the ground floor in the same alignment. Udaykumar Shiroorkar, assistant commissioner of ward said, "The ward office has received several applications for permission to construct toilets above ground floor. But we cannot give permission as there is a constraint in the law." He added that bio-digester toilets can be a good alternative for families looking to construct toilets.

According to Shiroorkar, the bio-digester toilets developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) are simple and low-cost technology for treating human waste. "The DRDO has developed for bio-digester toilets for defence personnel who move from one place to another. These toilets can be set up easily," said Shiroorkar.

The tank is available from 300 litre to 1000 litre capacity depending upon the number of families. "A physically handicapped brother and sister from my ward had approached me to construct a toilet on the second floor as they cannot use the ground floor toilet. But, they cannot be given permission due to the civic body's laws," said Shiroorkar.

The bio-digester toilets are easy to transport and install, maintenance-free, facilitate a continuous biological process and odorless effluent discharge. "The zero-waste bio-digester technology breaks down human excreta into usable water and gas through anaerobic process," added Shiroorkar.
