The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has geared up to beautify beaches across the city. In the next six months — as per the plans readied by the civic body — a theme-based beautification project of five beaches is set to take center stage. Beaches like Juhu, Girgaum, Mahim, Dadar and Gorai will be given a complete makeover, with the civic body installing new high-mast lamps, security railings, lifeguard stations and developing small gardens-parks along the shores.

With the city known for its shoreline, the plans to develop these beaches is now been worked on war footing by the civic body with the project been lined to be completed by February of 2017. "The plans have been finalised for the beach-beautification project and they will be rolled out from next month," said additional municipal commissioner (Projects) Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, while adding that the beautification project is modelled on lines of international beaches.

The civic body will be carrying out theme-based beautification of these beaches in sync with the locality around them. Citing an example, Mukherjee explained that the beach of Mahim, which predominantly harbours small fishing boats of the local koliwada, will sport an array of decorative lights. "The traditional-cultural theme will be used in the Mahim beach, bringing to life the koli-life. Lights will also be shed on the coast to dot the number of traditional small boats used by these fishermen."

Juhu to undergo facelift first

The suburban beach of Juhu will be the first to undergo beautification. The plan includes installation of 100 pillars at least 12 metre high along the shore — similar to masts of sailboats, and four LEDs on the lower side of a sailboat. These LEDs will be projected at regular intervals, the dim lights would change colour periodically, creating an illusion of sailboats. "The entire design of Juhu beach has been done by BMC engineers. The plan is ready and we will be shortly awarding the project, which is set to be completed by December," Mukherjee said.

While the plan to deck up the beach had received a resistance from the locals. The BMC claimed that, all the issues have been resolved, after the project received CRZ clearance recently. Similarly, the civic body in its bid to beautify Girgaum Chowpatty has roped in conservation architecture Vikas Dilwari to prepare a plan for the beach. The plan will be then submitted to the High Court-appointed committee for its approval. The Girgaum chowpatty will have its deck up been done in accordance with the beautification model for the Queen's necklace.

The beaches of Mahim, Dadar and Gorai will be the next three in lines to undergo similar primping. The civic body has set aside Rs 50 crore for the entire project.
