Giving major relief to residents, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has withdrawn the water cut imposed for over a month in the wake of scanty rainfall in catchment areas.

The corporation announced withdrawal of the cuts executed in categories of consumers — domestic and commercial — following satisfactory average rainfall (1,869.68mm) across seven dams from where water is supplied to Mumbai. An announcement to this regard was made during BMC's standing committee meeting on Tuesday.

According to hydraulic engineer's department, as on August 12, stock available across the reservoirs was 12,41,827 million litres, slightly higher vis-à-vis that recorded in 2013 at 12,40,054 million litres.

As reported in dna earlier, the corporation had since July 2 implemented a 10% cut in the time duration for which it supplied water to domestic consumers. In the wake of receding lake levels, the civic body later increased the cut to 20%. It had also inflicted a 50% cut (in terms of quantity of water) in supply made to commercial establishments and recreational facilities.

"Earlier, rains played truant in the catchment region. But rainfall started picking up in the areas after July 27. We are now in a position to afford to withdraw the cut," a senior official from the department said.

The official hoped lake regions continue to receive adequate rainfall over the next one-and-a-half months so as to ensure enough stock as on October 1. "Over the past few days, the catchment area has received lesser showers. But we hope rainfall picks up in the days to come and the lake levels remain constant until September-end. So, even though we have cancelled the cut, we will still request people to use water judiciously," he added.
