After negotiating for four months, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demolished 172 structures under the dilapidated Delisle Bridge on Friday night. Subsequently, the Western Railways (WR) started taking down the western side of the bridge on Saturday.
The Delisle Bridge was shut for public use after it was declared unsafe by Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, on July 24, 2018. Demolition work on bridge began on August 20 and was supposed to be complete by February 2019. The G south ward, on February 2, razed 17 structures on the eastern side of the bridge. The ROB on the eastern side was taken down last week.
On the western side, the 172 structures were allotted to Damodar Khamkar Market. “It was necessary to evacuate all these stalls/structures for the demolition of the Delisle ROB. On Friday, in consultation with Market Department, Estate Department, Bridge Department, and the Western Railway the stalls were evacuated and demolished,” P Jain, ward officer of G south, said.
