A corpse of a cow has been lying on the railway tracks of Bandra station since Saturday evening, but neither the railways nor the BMC has carried it away. On the contrary, each one of them has passed the buck on the other of clearing it.

According to Shraddha Shelar of NGO Apes and Reptile Rescue Unit, the cow was hit by a train. "Even when it was lying injured, nobody bothered to take it to a doctor," she said.

According to Shelar, the corpse was in a bad shape and stinking. "The intestines of the animal have come out. When I enquired with the railway authorities, they told me it's the BMC's responsibility to lift it and carry it away. Do they wait for the BMC to lift a dead person?" she asked.

"I waited from 12.30pm to 2pm, but nobody came from BMC. Finally, I called up Bandra (East) corporator Dr Priyatama Sawant, who promised me that it would be cleared in 20 minutes. I left home and was back by 5.30pm and the corpse was still there," added Shelar.

Sharad Chandrayan, Western Railway PRO, said, "Since it is in the railway premises, it is our responsibility. Since we don't have any disposal mechanism, we will take BMC's help and get it cleared."
Sawant said that the delay was because of the unavailability of a vehicle since it was a Sunday.

An official from the solid waste management of BMC said that since the incident took place within the railway premises, they should have brought it out of their premises for the BMC to carry it away. "Like the way societies keep garbage outside their premises, the railway authorities should have brought it out for us. We can't go inside their premises to carry it away," he said.
