Swabhiman Sanghatna leader and Congress MLA Nitesh Rane on Thursday said failure of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and police to take action on illegal hookah parlours compelled his workers to vandalise the hookah bar in Andheri.

Talking about Swabhiman workers who vandalised Sirocco Lounge at Versova on Wednesday night, Rane said that despite 14 people's death at Kamala Mills Compound, BMC and police are not shutting the illegal hookah parlours.

As per the Supreme Court guidelines, you cannot serve food at this particular Sirocco bar, but they are serving food, liquor and hookah as well. Myself and local BJP MLA Bharati Lavekar had also made several complaints to police and BMC's ward officer.

However, no actions has been taken for last eight months," said Rane.

Swabhiman Sanghatna has been running a campaign to ban hookah parlours in teh city. "There is no hookah policy in place and they are running illegally in full swing. We have to learn from the gruesome tragedy at Kamala Mills," Rane said.

He said, the BMC either has to approve the hookah policy or start actions against all illegal hookah parlors. "The nexus of the police and the BMC officials are protecting these illegal parlours.
