In order to ensure safety of people using subways, the civic body has decided to renovate subways at Churchgate station and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.

The civic officials said that a proposal to renovate these two subways is being examined at present and a decision will be taken soon.

“Since these two subways, which are the busiest, are badly maintained and poorly lit, we have decided to renovate them. There are many complaints about littering inside the subways,” said a civic official, adding that this has resulted in a large number of people refusing to use these subways.

The official added that the renovation work will involve putting in place lighting, proper gates and carrying out repairs to make the subways citizen-friendly. “Besides subways, we are considering making the station area safe. But we are yet to finalise matters,”said the official, adding that the civic body will bear the renovation cost.

Meanwhile, a corporator  of Samajwadi Party has demanded renovation of the Kurla station. “It is in a poor state and needs immediate renovation. Many citizens have complained of the place being unsafe. The civic body should take it on priority considering the issue of women safety,” saidcorporator Ashraf Azmi.
