In some bright news for Mumbaikars, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to install high-mast lights at three beaches in the western suburbs - Juhu, Versova and Seven Bungalows.

High-mast lights, which are attached to the top of a tall pole and point down to the ground, are commonly used to light up highways and large grounds.

According to the decision made during a joint meeting chaired by standing committee chairman Yashodhar Phanase and attended by local corporator Dilip Patel and senior civic officials recently, the BMC will install 154 high-masts lamps at the thre seafronts.

The project is going to lighten the civic coffers by Rs1.70 crore. The corporation has also made a provision of Rs25 lakh for installing CCTV cameras at these beaches.

These lights, officials said, will be unidirectional with higher lux levels to ensure that light is thrown with more intensity as compared to the normal lamps.

During the meeting, Phanase reportedly instructed BMC personnel to expedite the installation of the lamps on priority basis so that people visiting seashores during the dark hours are not inconvenienced.

“Before we undertake the installation work, we will have to carry out soil testing for the project. Hence, a consultant has been appointed. The agency is expected to submit its report to us in two weeks,” said a senior civic official requesting not to be named.

The official further said the actual work on the project will be commissioned after studying recommendations made in the report.

According to the officials, the BMC will also need to seek permission from the airport authority to implement the project in some areas under the central government.

Meanwhile, residents hoped the BMC does the work on priority, as planned. “The corporation plans a lot many things but does few of them. It must ensure the seafronts are adequately lit in a timely manner to ensure safety. We often read about dead bodies being recovered from sea. Authorities will be able to keep vigil and stop such instances from occurring if beaches are properly illuminated,” said Rohan Sawant, an Andheri resident.
