The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to install CCTV cameras at playgrounds across the city to ensure children are and prevent any misuse of playgrounds. According to civic officials, it has been observed that playgrounds were being misused for private functions and were also being encroached.

“Once CCTVs are installed, it will prevent encroachments on playgrounds, and ensure the facility is used for sports only,” said a civic official.

The BMC had taken back a 5,000 sq m plot in Mulund from the Mulund Gymkhana in March after it was discovered that the club, which has been maintaining the playground, had violated its agreement with the civic body. The plot was given to the club for maintenance in 1999.

However, the club reportedly breached terms and conditions and used the playground for purposes other than those specified in the agreement. “The ground was used for private functions,” said the official.

A proposal seeking the installation of CCTVs at bus stands, playgrounds, and popular hangout spots could also come up at the next BMC general body meeting, as Congress Corporator Javed Juneja had moved a notice of motion in this regard during the previous meeting.
