The BMC standing committee on Wednesday last (Aug 20) approved proposals worth Rs 620cr for undertaking road repair works.

In the standing committee meeting on that day, Congress corporators alleged that Shiv Sena leaders had tabled the proposals keeping the assembly polls in mind.

The proposals had been prepared overnight and approved in the standing committee on Wednesday as they knew the election code of conduct would soon be in place, an opposition corporator alleged. "For this purpose, the rule of sending the agenda to the members three days prior to it being tabled had been twisted," said Congress corporator Pravin Chheda.

Chheda has also demanded the verification of the rule regarding BMC administration sending the agenda to members three days prior to it being tabled.

Standing committee chairman Yashodhar Phanse, however, approved the proposals ignoring the demands of the opposition. As per the agenda, the work of resurfacing roads from mechanise mastic and repair of small and big roads in eastern suburbs would be taken up.

The code of conduct for the assembly elections is likely to be in place next week.

During the Lok Sabha elections, Rs 1,200cr-worth proposals were sanctioned, but as the code of conduct was in place, the monsoon work could not be expedited.

Cost factor:
* Resurfacing of city roads through mechanise mastic: Rs 400cr.
* M-west (Chembur west)–small and big roads repair works: Rs 153cr.
* M-west (Chembur west)–concrete roads: Rs 32cr.
* Kurla, Bhandup, Mulund: Rs 35cr.
