After being ranked first in the 'State Capital Category' in the cleanliness survey conducted across the country last year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is gearing up for Swachh Survekshan 2019. Unlike last year, the assessors will arrive in the city without giving prior intimation, which has kept ward officers along with officers from the solid waste management on their toes.

Last month Municipal Commissioner, Ajoy Mehta had asked the concerned officer to be prepared for the same.

"There are many criteria. Some are related to the overall cleanliness of the city. So we asked concerned workers and officials to be on their toes," said an officer from the BMC, adding, "Many ward officers have already inspected their respective wards. They have given instruction to staff on the same and have sent notices to big societies who failed to start waste management in their premises."

The city has applied for only 3 stars in the 7 star rated system, raising many eyebrows. Defending its decision, BMC said that in a huge city like Mumbai and in view of the present status of cleanliness, it is very hard to meet criteria for 3 stars.

"There are many hurdles to implement the rules of cleanliness in a huge and diverse city like Mumbai. We work hard for compliance of waste management from bulk generators. Those who haven't started have received notice from us," said one of the officer. BMC has fulfilled some criteria like the door to door waste collection, sweeping, spot fines, plastic ban but the officers are concerned about other criteria like charging for waste handling, bulk garbage generators compliance, twin litter bins and water drains (Nullah) free of solid waste.
