The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) should repair the toilets of old dilapidated buildings, most of which are located in south Mumbai, proposed a BJP corporator from the area Atul Shah. The mooted proposal will be discussed in the house of BMC on January 5 and Shah is confident that it will sail through. Nearly 14,000 of the dilapidated buildings are spread across areas in south Mumbai like Mohammed Ali Road, Gamdevi, Girgaum, Goldeol, and Nagpada among others.

"In most cases of building collapses, the first part that comes undone is usually the toilet. Toilets aren't well maintained, the walls are leaking and damaged. Our PM has started the Swachh Bharat Mission and BMC spends thousands of crore on cleanliness in slums then why not for these buildings," remarked Shah, who claims that since these buildings have been in the city for a long time, their tenants have full right on the civic body. "Expecting the landlord to maintain the building's common toilet is not valid.

So the BMC should take the matter up and get the repair done, from changing the vessels in the toilet to repairing leakages and other aspects so that hygienic and proper toilet facilities are provided to the tenants of the dilapidated old buildings," said Shah.

If the proposal is passed by the house, it will go to the commissioner.
