After chaos ensued on the roads once the Ghatkopar bridge that connects the area to the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) was shut, sources in the civic body said it may be reopened for smaller vehicles.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is waiting for the consultant's report on the bridge with regard to a remedy of the problem areas. According to a source in the civic body, iron sheets may be placed over the bridge to keep it open during monsoon. The final decision will be taken on Monday.

A re-audit of bridges in the eastern and western parts of the city found 15 more bridges in a dilapidated condition; the Ghatkopar-Laxmi Baug nullah was one of them. "The list of dilapidated bridges was sent to all departments concerned so that they can make the public aware and arrange for an alternative. The bridges have to be shut in monsoon to ensure people's safety. We cannot repair or reconstruct then in the rainy months," an official from the bridges department of the civic body said.

NO PLAN B

  • The BMC is waiting for the consultant’s report on the bridge

  • Since, the bridge was shut without an alternate option or prior notice, it has led to a lot of chaos on the roads, said a local corporator

  • Civic body says it can repair or reconstruct bridge only after monsoon

However, the Ghatkopar bridge was closed without any prior notice or making an alternate arrangement and hence, it has led to chaotic traffic. Even local political leaders have raised their concern over the situation. The BMC is now thinking of reopening the bridge for smaller vehicles after consulting the traffic police and engineers from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B). "The bridge can remain open if iron plates are placed on the bridge. Roads at the Bandra- Kurla Complex have such plates. The higher authorities will decide only after receiving the report," said an official from the BMC.

"Sudden closure of the bridge leads to a lot of traffic in the area. The BMC should allow light vehicles to ply," said Rakhi Jadhav, local corporator, Ghatkopar.
