The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration has decided to make Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBS) mandatory for its 1.07 lakh employees from July 15. A circular regarding this has already been sent out to all departments including all ward offices. Since May, the civic body was carrying out trials to weed out any hurdles in the implementation.

After July 15, the latecomers will have to face salary cut. A copy of the circular was also seen put up near the biometric machine in some of the ward offices.

According to civic officials, trials have been conducted successfully across all offices, and issues regarding the machine were sorted out. During the trial period, some employees claimed that they faced difficulty while processing their attendance as the machine tends to crash. "If 10 to 12 employee process their attendance by putting their finger in a short span of time, the machine hangs, and requires rebooting to again process the attendance of the remaining staff," said a staff from a K east ward office.

"One biometric machine has been assigned for 40 staff members and accordingly the number of machines are increased with the increase in staff number," said a senior official from the IT department of the BMC. He added that the machine takes eight seconds to process a single attendance, and it will take maximum 3 to 4 minutes for processing the attendance of all 40.
