The A ward (Colaba-Cuffe Parade-Churchgate) office of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation(BMC) is looking to provide space to restaurants and buildings in the business district of Nariman Point who don't have space to install a compost machine. BMC took the decision after restaurants and some buildings approached the ward office stating that they did not have space to compost their waste.
"We are giving them space at Suraksha Garden dry waste segregation centre. We allocated the space when few people came together and demanded the space. One group is from Nariman Point CBD and the other is of restaurants in the area," said Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner of A ward (Colaba-Churchgate).
Once the space is provided, the restaurants will be chipping in to buy the compost plant that will be installed. "We had been talking to BMC for a while because a number of our restaurants do not have space. They said that such plants can be put in market place so that there is no problem for the residents. We have been told to buy the plant which we have agreed. ," said Niranjan Shetty, chairman of the AHAR (Indian Association of Hotels and Restaurants).
"Initially they are expected to put up a plant with capacity of five tonnes. We look to cover over 30 restaurants to begin with. After we see what kind of response we have, the capacity of the plants may be increased," said Hansu Pardiwala, director of Hari Dharti Eco Solutions which is in talks with the municipal office provides services of looking after the plant and collection of waste.
Pardiwala added, "Our services will be charged. We will be collecting waste from restaurants that do not have space like Leopolds, Delhi Darbar and The Table among others. We will collect the waste and look after the machine. We will be doing this along with Clean Mumbai Foundation."
