The BMC has issued notices to five-star hotels, restaurants, sports clubs, residential complexes, movie theatres and government offices across South Mumbai, where waste generation is more than 100 kgs per day, to start facilities in their vicinity to treat wet waste at source.

Among the bulk waste generators in the city, the BMC has identified that around 30 per cent are from South Mumbai. The civic body has served notices to around 97 per cent of them for not disposing of waste at their premises.

According to data available with the solid waste management (SWM) department of BMC, there are a total of 1,236 bulk waste generator societies across the city. Of these, 360 are from South Mumbai.

"We have served notices to around 351 societies in South Mumbai alone to segregate waste at source and also plan to dispose of garbage at their premises otherwise the civic body will stop lifting garbage," said Vijay Balamwar, deputy municipal commissioner of SWM department.

According to civic officials, as per the provision of Municipal Solid Waste Rules 2016, these bulk waste generators have been asked to provide facilities like organic waste converter, vermicomposting and biomethanation in their backyard to treat the waste at source.

Though the BMC has made it compulsory for bulk waste generators to dispose of garbage in their premises, many societies have shown inability as they do not have the space.

From October 2, the BMC has decided to not lift garbage from premises or societies if the waste is not segregated at source.
