The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated a table survey of the two biggest cemeteries in south Mumbai along with other small ones. It will include boundary wall, total area measurement of the cemetery, number of people buried, safety of walls, washrooms and other aspects.

Samajwadi Party corporator from south Mumbai, Rais Shaikh, and leader of the house in BMC, Yashwant Jadhav, along with BMC officials recently had a meeting about the survey.

According to Shaikh, the BMC didn’t have details on the cemeteries in Mumbai until two years ago, hence work on preparing a list with all the details was initiated. “Barring one or two cemeteries, the remaining are with private parties. After this table survey, providing required facilities to the cemeteries will be smoother.”

“We have two big cemeteries — bada kabrastan and nariyalwadi kabrastan — in south Mumbai. There are small cemeteries too and many of them are illegally encroached. Other issues such as light and water supply, boundary walls will also be understood once the table survey is done. The process has begun in Nariyalwadi kabrastan,” added Shaikh.

It is not known how long the process will take.
