BMC faces corporators' ire over waste collection

The civic body has appointed new contractors from November 1, to lift garbage across the city.

On Monday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) faced the ire of its own corporators in the standing committee meeting for reducing the number of collection vehicles in the new contract without examining the ground reality. They said that with the vehicles avoided visiting some collection points for a few days which resulted in piling up of garbage.

The civic body has appointed new contractors from November 1, to lift garbage across the city. But the garbage is being piled up in many suburbs like Wadala, Shivadi, Chembur, Govandi, Mankhurd from last few days. Raising the issue in the standing committee meeting, Rais Sheikh, group leader of Samajwadi Party said, "The claim of reduced daily waste generation by 2,300 metric tonnes a day is only on papers, it's not the reality. Based on the claims, the number of waste collecting vehicles has been reduced by 20 per cent. The result can be seen in M East, M West Ward." Rais Sheikh was backed by corporators from all political parties while they discussed various issues regarding garbage in the city. Mangesh Satamkar, corporator from Sion insisted, "At least the BMC should give proper information to its corporators about the reduction of waste collecting vehicles in a particular ward so that they get a clear picture of the issue."

Alka Kerkar, corporator from Bandra west said, "In several small lanes of Bandra, silt from nearby gutter has piled up. There's nobody to lift it. Even vehicles for transportation of tree waste do not come regularly."

Prabhakar Shinde, corporator from Mulund, demanded a White Paper on solid waste management department.

While Vishwas Shankarvar, deputy municipal commissioner of solid waste management department assured that the issue will be resolved in few days after rearrangement of vehicles. Speaking about silt and tree waste issue, he said, "Silt will be lifted up by the stormwater department and tenders for the same will be floated in 2-3 days. The garden department is looking after transportation of tree waste."
