Prime minister Narendra Modi's Make In India initiative seems to have inspired the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) staff, who put their heads together and ended up building an art installation on traffic island near the Western Express Highway (WEH) in Vile Parle (E).

Finished only in a month's time, the 14-feet installation will be illuminated by Friday evening. The engineers' work, executed with minimum funds, reflects the spirit of Make in India. "Our Maintenance department engineers decided to beautify the traffic island on their own. They hired a local welder and guided him as per their design. They have done an excellent job," said Devendra Jain, assistant commissioner of K-East ward.

Nisha Patil, sub-engineer from the K-East ward, said the ward office had called a meeting of 138 different agencies for beautification of the traffic island. "Our colleague Rohit Rajas had a concept in mind, as a relative had sent him a photo of an art installation in Toronto, Canada. We discussed the idea and the possibility of making it here. We received positive feedback. That's how the journey started. We then discussed the plan and execution was done under close supervision. Thankfully, the fabricator did an excellent job."

"We are happy that the installation is ready before the Make In India week. All the dignitaries and visitors will surely notice our work," said Nisha.

The artwork stands on a four-feet stage near Avion Hotel in Vile Parle (E) near the airport. The hotel management has agreed to do the illumination, and have chosen the best lamps for the purpose – IP 56 water-proof LED lamps. While the installation itself cost Rs3.5 lakh, the illumination will cost Rs1 lakh.

Now, the ward has planned another identical, but a much bigger, installation at the traffic island at the corner of Malaviya Road and V S Khandekar Road. That installation will also be ready in a month's time. "The height of this one will be 25 feet, which will look grand. We had height restrictions at the highway site," explained Patil.
