BMC employees learn facts about breast cancer

The hospital held the awareness session for employees of BMC's D ward which covers areas like Girgaum, Malabar Hill, Grant Road and Peddar Road

"When we hear about cancer, we get scared," said most of the BMC employees attending the breast cancer awareness programme organised by Jaslok Hospital on the occasion of  National Breast Cancer Week. The hospital held the awareness session for employees of BMC's D ward which covers areas like Girgaum, Malabar Hill, Grant Road and Peddar Road.

"The session has helped us learn about measures to be taken to avoid breast cancer. Rather than being embarrassed, women should come forward to talk about the condition and go for regular check-ups," said Vidhi Mutatkar, an employee in D ward.

Dr Reetu Jain, medical oncologist, Jaslok Hospital said, "Teenagers need to be aware about a healthy lifestyle so that in the future they won't have to suffer. Prevention measures must be taken due to which creating awareness is essential. Commonly, women between 35 to 45 years of age suffer from breast cancer. There was a lot of eagerness in the participants to learn. Cancer is just a word and one shouldn't get scared of it as there are a lot of treatment and precautions available for it."

Rajashree Dhole, "Prevention is better. Women generally hesitate or get embarrassed to ask questions due to which such platforms help them clear their doubts."

As per data, over six lakh people died due to cancer in 2010. Women between the age group of 30 to 69 are the majority affected by breast cancer. Every year, about one million people are diagnosed with cancer. According to doctors, early detection is necessary for cure. Many people harbour myths regarding cancer which need to be clarified by creating awareness.
