The B ward of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has created a property worth Rs 15 crore by removing encroachment from 1,100 sq metre area beneath the Eastern Freeway Flyover in Badi Bunder on P D'Mello Road, and developed the said plot with a park and amenities like police chowky and solid waste centre.

The MMRDA handed over the Eastern Freeway Flyover to BMC after construction. However, the said plot beneath the flyover was encroached by shanties, and people used the space to keep horses and horse carts. In addition, heavy vehicles of a local transporter used to be parked there, including a Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) leased godwon.

"The entire stretch beneath the flyover looked shabby, therefore we decided to beautify the place," said Udaykumar Shiroorkar, assistant municipal commissioner of B ward. He added that illegal shanties and parking were prevented several times in the past but soon after the drive, they would return to take up the space. "So, we decided to develop the plot and prevent such encroachments in the future," he said.

"There was strong resistance from the encroachers but the Dongri police station helped evict them for the project's successful compeltion," said Shiroorkar. The encroachers also approached the Bombay High Court for stay on the land's development. However, the court rejected their plea.

The concepts, designs and estimates were outlined, and sanctions were obtained from DMC Zone-I for beautification and developing the land. The 1,100 sq metre land was developed with a cost of around Rs 1.06 crore. "With the development of the land, we have not only taken possession of land worth Rs 8.5 crore but also created an asset worth Rs 15 crore," said Shiroorkar.

Apart from a park, the civic body also constructed a police chowky and a solid waste centre. "The junction is important as heavy vehicles ply most of time and it also connects with Bhaucha Dhakka," said Shiroorkar. He added that a police chowky will ensure safety.
