Over 41 mobile teachers are deployed by the education department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in its 11,068 schools to groom the 12,000 plus differently-abled students for a bright future, without any hindrance.

The duties of these teachers include train and orient regular teachers on how to handle students with disabilities, understand the pattern of every student and act accordingly, interact with the psychologist or the doctor of the student, coordinate with the student's parents in person, etc.

"Teaching the students can be quite challenging, but the problematic area of this part disappears when one knows what the student is like. Every student is considered to be different and that can be known by the psychologist, parents and home teacher which we chart down and understand," said Kiran Belge, district coordinator of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA).

Kiran who teaches students with hearing disability further explains, "Teaching just not means basic black-board teaching, but with adaptive mannerism, creativity, smart techniques that help students to learn and under better. Students with hearing aid (in his case) is often first introduced to teaching in visual, lip reading and sign language form which does not only apply to teacher, but also the other students, also the friends and family of the student." Kiran is one among the 41 mobile teachers the civic body has in Mumbai region.

"In a class if there's a student who has visual impairment is often made to sit with a student who has huge handwriting. Likewise, in case of hearing impairment or can hear less, other students are asked to recite what is written on the textbook or blackboard so that student can hear it," said Bharti Misa, a special educator specialises in visual impairment. She further explained, similarly, when it comes to oral exams, home teachers or regular teachers are trained in a format where they can understand what the student is saying by the voice, facial expression and body language.

As per Mahesh Palkar, education officer of BMC, close to 4,000 parents of specially-disabled students have been trained and oriented this year. "Parents spend most of the time with their kids so there's no way anybody knows them better. This year we have 2,000 to 3,000 students who fall in the 'severe' category out of the 12,000 total students, but they continue to have healthy learning/schooling in the schools, thanks to the mobile teachers," said Palkar, proudly.
