The proposed project of underground shopping plaza and a basement public parking facility at Raosaheb Patwardhan Garden project in Bandra West, is gathering steam with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demolishing a stretch of the 50-metre compound wall around the garden, earlier this week, to create a larger entry gate from Linking Road.

The over-1500 square metre Patwardhan garden presently has a small entry facing the National College.

The H-West Ward of BMC has also issued a notice to Linking Road stall owners to restructure their stalls to the original 1x1 metre area allotted to them in 1978. Many owners at present have extended the stalls beyond the allotted area.

Linking Road stall owners have been protesting against the underground shopping complex project at Patwardhan garden as their stalls will be shifted. They also claim that the civic body does not have the required permissions to initiate the project. One hundred and forty stall owners were on a month-long protest and had shut their stalls as BMC officials were demolishing the stalls citing violations.

The stall owners, however, allege that the civic body was demolishing their stalls to pave way for the underground shopping plaza and basement parking project at the garden, a project mooted by BJP MLA Ashish Shelar.

The project will also have a subway for pedestrians to ease the traffic in the area.

Assistant Municipal Commissioner of H-West Ward said, "The garden is huge and beautiful. We want more people to use it, which is why we are giving it a larger entry. This is an initial step towards executing the long-term project of developing a shopping plaza and underground public parking "

What is the project-

A pet project of BJP MLA Ashish Shelar, it involves construction of an underground shopping plaza and basement public parking

The main objective of the project is to make the popular street shopping zone into one having a dedicated space

The total cost of the project is Rs 88 crore, excluding administrative and consultancy service charges

The plaza is slated to cover 1500 square metre area

There will be 200 shops, each of 2x1 square metre area

The project needs diversion of existing utilities (especially water lines)

It will have a sewage treatment plant, parking space for school buses, spaces earmarked for autos, taxis, fleet cabs, and other public transportation
