Is the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) moving at a snail's pace, or not moving at all?

BMC has not granted extension to around 365 aided and non-aided schools in the city. The files on this are lying with the corporation. If these school are not granted extension immediately, that would jeoparadise the future of thousands of students. And the worst news is, extension will be due for another 350 schools this year.

Every five years, numerous aided and unaided schools seek extension from BMC. A highly placed sources in the civic education department said that around 365 unaided and aided schools had applied for extension, but it had not been granted for unknown reasons.

According to civic officials, 400 aided and 600 non-aided schools have to seek recognition every five years. Permission is required even for starting a new division. And complaints of irregularities in this process are aplenty.
The issue was raised in the civic education committee by one of the members. He said BMC education committee had "failed in granting these schools extension on time".

Many members of the committee have come out in support of these schools that were being given a raw deal. One of them, Congress corporator Ajanta Yadav, said: "Owners and directors of schools are made to run here and there for getting extension. There is no clarity even on the documents required for the process."

Speaking to dna Yadav said: "There should be a time limit for granting extension. That could save precious time of everyone concerned. If the time limit is not adhered to, strict action should be initiated against the officials concerned. That would deter them from repeating the mistake."

One of the school directors said: "Civic officials are least bothered about the future of students. We need to grease their palms from time to time to get approvals, and despite that they delay granting permission. It's high-time civic officials are punished for depriving education to students for none of their fault."

Vinod Shelar, BMC education committee chairman, said: "We will make sure there is no delay in granting extension. We are keeping track on delay tactics adopted by civic official. We will make sure these files are cleared at the earliest."
