BMC delays assigning contractor for tree trimming

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has missed deadline to assign a contractor for tree trimming which is necessary before the onset of monsoon.

The proposal for trimming trees ahead of monsoon has not yet cleared by BMC. The meeting on Monday was adjourned due to death of two ex-corporators. Even the court hearing where the BMC was to decide on a tree expert will be postponed to Wednesday.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has missed deadline to assign a contractor for tree trimming which is necessary before the onset of monsoon. The proposal of Rs 90 crores to trim trees across 24 wards for two years was tabled in the Tree Authority (TA) meeting held on Monday. The existing contract given in 2016 will end on Thursday, May 16, and the new contract is to be given before that.

The proceeding of TA meeting was adjourned as to pay homage to ex-corporators, Sadanand Lad and Veluswami Naidu.

However, the civic body started the process of tendering much earlier, the final proposal has delayed. The date of next meeting is still not decided. The allocation of work orders will take another week after the sanctioning of the proposal.

About 510 tree collapse incidents and 1,077 branch collapse incidents were reported in 2018 monsoon. Four men and two women died in these incidents while 18 men and 12 women were injured.
