In a recent beautification project undertaken by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), shows the kind of beauty the civic body believes in. And no its not inner beauty we are talking about but the superficial one. On the banks of Lido Nallah in Santacruz (west) near SNDT University, the civic body has put up a floral installation and just behind the installation a drain full of garbage can be seen which makes it a perfect breeding spot for mosquitoes, rodents and pests.

While walking on the Juhu Tara Road, one can spot this installation which aims to raise awareness about the issue of the girl child and environment.

Lido Nallah is one of the major drains of the city. While the civic body clears such drains of garbage and removes silt, it is ideally supposed to clean the drain thrice a year — before, during and after the monsoon. However, the civic body fails to clean these drains during the year and only wakes up before the monsoon fearing floods.

Locals residing adjacent to the drain have been requesting BMC since a couple of months to clear the clogged drains as it poses as a serious health threat to the residents. "We are slowly being convinced that nobody cares for our health. Since the clogged drain had become an eyesore, they beautified it to cover the dirt. But this is definitely not a solution we expected. Lido nallah is choked to the extent that the water has become stagnant. This has increased mosquitoes and rat menace in the area. The flats facing the drain have to suffer the stench. We can't even invite friends and relatives over," said Salil Bhangvi, resident of Juhu Sangeeta Apartments

Another resident said that no one bothers round the year. "Civic body is turning a blind eye towards the encroachment along the nallah. Most of the shops are either regularised or are in place since a long time. Thus, they can approach the court when BMC come for demolition," Bhangvi added.

Prashant Gaikwad, Assistant Commissioner of K-west ward said that cleaning of drains will be taken up soon and results will be seen in a fortnight. "Annual cleaning of drains as a pre-monsoon exercise will be done and we will start the work aggressively," he said.
