Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials and the Malvani police seized 500 kg of plastic bags stored illegally in a tempo in a joint operation on Saturday. The bags have an estimated worth of Rs 5 lakh.

P-north ward officials of the BMC, along with the Malvani police participated in the operation. The police also suspect that a sealed godown also has a huge quantity of plastic bags stored in it.

Based on a tip-off, about 10 BMC officials along with police officers started the operation at 4.30 pm on Saturday. The raid continued beyond midnight. "The tempo has been confiscated and we are expecting that the godown, which has been sealed, has also stored the same quantity of plastic bags," said Devendra Jain, assistant municipal commissioner of P-north ward.

"The godown will be opened on Monday to check the amount of plastic stored there. The police have also initiated the necessary action against the accused," he added.

A police official confirmed the incident and said, "We have registered the offence, it a violation of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act. The BMC will now be looking into the matter."
