With an estimated eight lakh followers expected to gather at Chaitya Bhoomi in Dadar on Tuesday for Mahaparinirvan Diwas, the death anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar, the police and BMC have put in place elaborate arrangements to ensure crowd control and basic facilities for the visitors.

Heavy police deployment, arrangements for water, health camps and accommodation for the followers, were already in place on Monday. The BMC stated that since the crowd this year will be larger, it took over the Shivaji Park earlier than they do each year.

At both Shivaji Park and Chaitya Bhoomi, like every year, people have already started coming from Monday. “The crowd began gathering in the area from the early hours of Monday and will disperse only on Wednesday,” said Devi Kailash from Ghatkopar, an ardent follower of Ambedkar who has been visiting Shivaji Park on December 6 for the past 20 years.

While Kailash was from Mumbai, several others were from the interiors of Maharashtra, and some even from other states. many of them were waiting for the day by staying put at the Shivaji Park, where space is provided for people traveling from outside the city to stay. Besides Shivaji Park, the BMC stated that staying facilities were also provided at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar College, Wadala. Staying facility for monks was provided in L ward (Kurla) close to the terminus from where a number of people arrive into the city. Arrangements are also made for senior citizens.

At Shivaji Park, 1.2 lakh sq ft space has been earmarked for accommodation of 30,000 visitors. 320 taps, 200 mobile toilets, 15 water tankers to provide drinking water and 300 charging points will be provided to them. Several health posts will also be scattered in and around the area.

Like terminus, roads leading to Shivaji Park and Chaitya Bhoomi will have information centers and health camps. BMC stated that special arrangements have been made to ensure that order is kept when people queue up to go to Chaitya Bhoomi. “A single pathway for the devotees has been created for them to go to Chaitya Bhoomi so that better order is maintained and flow of crowd is under control,” said Ramdev More, a security volunteer at the park.
