The License Department of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has intensified action against illegal banners and hoardings across the city after the Election Commission's model code of conduct came into effect during the second week of February. The BMC has already pulled down over 7, 000 banners across the city in February.

A majority of the banners and hoardings belong to political parties or are religious in nature. The civic body has also filed 39 FIRs against violators for defacing public property.

As per the data available with the License Department, around 7, 420 illegal banners and hoardings were removed by the civic body after the date for Lok Sabha polls was declared in the second week of March. The civic body has also covered up nearly 8, 571 banners.

"We have also taken action against illegal banners put up by private properties," an official from the License Department said. However, the number of such banners is quite low as compared to banners in public places.

The data from the License Department revealed that most violations occurred in Goregaon, where 1,393 banners were removed, followed by Byculla with 1, 113, and Malad with 727 illegal banners being taken down.

"We have taken action under the Maharashtra Prevention of Defacement of Property Act, 1995 that empowers the BMC to remove illegal banners and hoardings," said the official. He added that the civic body is also empowered to cover up banners or signs of political parties during the elections.

From January 2018 to December 2019, the BMC has removed 12,457 illegal hoardings and banners in the city.

Of total 12, 457 illegal banners and hoardings, 7,167 banners were political, 2,154 commercial, and 3,136 religious. Around 655 FIRs have also been filed. Recently, a BJP corporator Murji Patel was asked to pay Rs 24 lakh as fine after the BMC approached the Bombay High Court against him for erecting illegal banners and assaulting civic officials.
