The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will take stern action against bulk generators for not starting segregation and composting of wet waste. The civic chief Ajoy Mehta will take a review meeting on waste segregation and issuance of notices to bulk generators and their compliances after Diwali, said an official from the Solid Waste Management (SWM) department of BMC.

The meeting has been scheduled to be held on October 25, and will be attended by all three additional commissioners (Eastern and Western suburbs and City), deputy municipal commissioner (DMC) of all five zones and deputy municipal commissioner of SWM.

"The waste segregation and composting matter will be taken as priority during the meeting," said a senior civic official. He added that the BMC would take stern steps for implementing the rule of compulsory waste segregation and composting for bulk generators.

The BMC has started issuing extension of three months to societies and commercial establishments which are bulk generators of waste, and have not yet started segregation and composting. The BMC has issued 5,304 bulk generators notices but only four per cent of bulk generators have started composting.
