Taking a cue from August 2017 water logging, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to install back rake screens at two pumping stations. The screens will ensure that flood water is pumped out by clearing waste, during monsoon. The civic body has made a provision of Rs 60 crore in budget 2019-20, tabled early this week.

The heavy rainfall in 2017 left many parts of the water logged. The pumping stations too were hit as they were clogged with plastic waste, as the result water could not be flushed out. "Waste materials like thermocol, water bottle, plastic had blocked the outlets at the pumping stations that led to flooding," said an official from the Storm Water Drain department of BMC.

There are five rainwater pumping stations functioning at the moment. They are Irla, Haji Ali, Cleveland and Lovegrove in Worli and Britannia Outfall on Reay Road. At present, the back rack screens have been proposed at Irla and Lovegrove. "Work order on Irla nullah has already been awarded while the tender process is going on for Lovegrove," said the official.

The back rack screens will prevent materials to reach the water pump at the pumping stations. "Apart from plastic, there were wood, footwear among others were found clogged at Irla and Lovegrove," said the official. He added that these all kinds of material will not reach the pump and pumping station will continue to function during heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, the civic body has awarded a fresh contract to complete the remaining work on Gazdarbandh pumping station at Khar while land acquisition process is going on for proposed Mogra pumping station. "We are expecting that the Gazdarbandh will start functioning from May 2019," said the official.

The civic body has already installed screens at the end of pumps to prevent waste from entering the sea. According to official, the back raked screens, are specialised equipment for cleaning and removing waste and debris from water at power stations.
