The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration has asked all assistant commissioners to lodge FIRs against people misusing its IT system and creating fake certificates. Last month, two fake licenses were issued online in the name of chief minister and municipal commissioner.

There was uproar after the mischief was done. The D ward of BMC issued licenses in the name of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis for a ladies bar and restaurant and municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta for a hookah parlour. Soon after it was reported, the BMC filed police complaints against unknown persons.

Ajoy Mehta, during his monthly review meeting, he directed all assistant commissioners to lodge FIR against persons misusing the IT system. "We have been asked to monitor the online system and track record of licenses being issued. If we find anything fishy, the same must be reported to the senior official, and also we must lodge police complaints," said an assistant commissioner of the BMC.

Unknown applicants managed to get a certificate in the name of CM and municipal commissioner in August where Mehta's certificate was issued under the Maharashtra Shops and Establishment Act, 1948, and his address as "municipal head office, second floor" was mentioned. This is the BMC chief's office address. Similarly, the certificate of "Ladies Bar and Restaurant" was issued in CM Devendra Fadnavis name and the postal address mentioned as Varsha in Malabar Hill- the official residence of the chief minister. Both certificates were issued from the D ward of BMC using the online system.

As part of the ease of doing business initiative, the civic body made getting a license for shops easy with simple online steps and self-declaration. However, mischief person used the system for issuing a fake certificate. The BMC has been issuing license since 2018.

According to an official from the licensing department of BMC, since the whole process is online and there is a self-declaration system, the persons providing all information will be responsible for any discrepancies.
