With Blinkers Day set to take place today evening, motorists across Mumbai should brace themselves for traffic problems during the evening rush hour. The rally, organised to protest against the false promises and delays in implementation of metro projects, will see participants travelling from Bandra to Dahisar.
The idea is to draw fellow motorists' attention towards 'MumbaiMetroMess' by, as the name suggests, blinking their (participants') vehicle lights. The route begins from Bandra Reclamation at 6.30pm and culminates at 8.30pm. Participating vehicles will have stickers of 'MumbaiMetroMess' on them.
In total, around 150 cars and 50 bikes will participate in the rally. Explaining their plan of action, participant Nilesh Tripathi said, "At the traffic junctions when the signal is red, we will also distribute information material to raise awareness about the reasons given by the government behind the delay in metro rail projects, particularly Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd."
In addition to this, the group wants to raise questions on delay and cost escalations in the projects, with a demand to expedite these projects by 2021. A publicity flyer reads: "There is a mess due to mismanagement and non-fulfilment of promises by the authorities. Only 11km has been delivered in the past 10 years, as against the assured 162kms."
When questioned about the rally only creating additional problems for motorists during the peak hour, Tripathi clarified, "There will not be additional vehicles, those who already travel this route during the peak hour are participating. Therefore, our campaign will not be problematic for Mumbaikars."
Also, those motorists who are not participating can also do their bit. Another publicity material reads: "If you can't join this route, then blink your lights anywhere you are in Mumbai between 6.30pm and 8.30pm on Wednesday."
