To improve connectivity to the business district, ground work on the Bandra Kurla Complex-Chunabhatti Connector will commence post-monsoon.

Talking to dna, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority commissioner UPS Madan said, "We had received bids in mid-July, which will be evaluated and construction work only will begin only after monsoon season is over."

A total of seven companies had shown interest in the project, out of which five firms submitted their bids, namely Gammon India, Simplex Infrastructures, J Kumar, Larsen & Toubro and JMC Projects.

In the next fortnight, the tenders submitted will be evaluated, followed by putting forward the details in the upcoming executive committee meeting of the MMRDA. It is only after the nod from the executive committee, work order will be issued by the development authority.

The bridge will be constructed between 'G' Block (behind Diamond Bourse) of Bandra Kurla Complex and Chunabhatti (near Somaiya Ground) bypassing Maharashtra Nature Park, LBS Road and railway tracks. Railway authorities have given in-principle approval to the project, but final clearance is still pending.

Due to changes in the design of this 1.6-km long connector, the estimated price too came down. "Earlier the plan was to have a cable-stayed structure over Mithi River to avoid any construction of pillar on the river, but now as per the environment report, it is possible to erect a pillar. This reduced cost of the project," said Madan. The earlier estimate cost was Rs 261 crore, which now stands at Rs 203 crore.

The idea behind the project is to improve connectivity of Bandra Kurla Complex for commuters and motorists travelling to and fro the eastern suburbs. Eventually, it will further reduce traffic congestion at Kalanagar and Sion-Dharavi Link Road. After the Santacruz Chembur Link Road was opened for motorists, there has been some reduction in traffic on Sion-Dharavi Link Road and Kalanagar.

Due to improper traffic dispersal system, on every working day, the business district witnesses traffic snarls at Kalina, LBS Road, MIG Colony Road and Kalanagar.
