Construction of the Bandra Kurla Complex-Chunabhatti connector will commence in a few weeks, as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will issue a work order soon. “The work order will be issued and construction should now commence in the coming weeks,” said an official.

What is the MMRDA waiting for?
dna had reported on January 28 how MMRDA is waiting for a notification from the union government to the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) that the connector doesn't require clearance from the union ministry of environment and forests (MoEF).

What does the union ministry notification say?
An MoEF notification issued last year said it is not necessary for the state government and authorities to send various infrastructure projects to MoEF for the final ecological clearance. Thus, the decision on several infrastructure projects has now been left up to the state coastal regulatory zone (CRZ) authority.

How has bridge change necessitated environmental clearance?
As per initial plans, the connector bridge was to be a cable-stayed structure over Mithi River to avoid any construction of pillar in the river, but the design has been revised and a pillar would be constructed on the river, thereby needing CRZ clearance. The estimated price of the project is Rs 203 crore. This would also mean that in future, the wait to get green nod would not be as liogn as it is now as the state environment body would have a final say on such proposals.

When was the connector commissioned?
The construction of this 1.6-km long bridge was commissioned on June 16 last year. But since then it has been awaiting CRZ clearance.

How will the project help the city?
The idea behind the project is to improve connectivity for motorists commuting between Bandra Kurla Complex and the eastern suburbs.
After the Santacruz Chembur Link Road was thrown open, there has been some reduction in traffic on Sion-Dharavi Link Road and Kalanagar. The BKC-Chunabhatti connector will further reduce traffic congestion at the two locations.
