BJP won both the seats at the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) by-election which was held on Sunday, results of which were announced on Monday.

By-elections for two seats were called for after two, then-elected Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) representatives, defected the party to join the Shiv Sena.

The MNS had taken disciplinary action against the two and had appealed to the divisional commissioner. The divisional commissioner cancelled corporatorship of the two and announced by-elections on the two vacant posts.

This was held on Sunday.

While the Shiv Sena and BJP fought the elections separately, the Congress and NCP chose to stick together.

BJP, Shiv Sena and MNS contested for both the seats while NCP contested in 35(B), and Congress contested in 36(B).

Both the seats are from the area of jail road, considered to be a bastion of the Shiv Sena. However, the BJP had made it an issue of prestige, and resolved to win the elections at all costs.

Likewise, BJP MLA Balasaheb Sanap and senior local leaders were personally supervising the election process. Leaving no stone unturned, the BJP took all possible efforts to ensure that voters voted for them.

While the campaigning appeared to be competitive, the voting passed off peacefully with 47% voting in 35(B) and 53% in 36(B).

The results were declared on Monday, with BJP winning both seats.

Manda Dhikale, of the BJP, a fresh face on the political canvas polled 1946 votes in 35(B), while Sunanda More also from BJP polled 1937 votes in 36 (B) ward.

Shiv Sena came in at second place in ward 35(B) while NCP in 36(B) respectively.

The new corporators will now get a chance to work in the NMC for about 4-5 months as corporation elections in Nashik are scheduled in January-February 2017, when the incumbent term ends.

Presently the NMC is being ruled by the MNS; initially it took the support of BJP and now of NCP to retain the seat of power in the city.
