Even as the Shiv Sena (SS) has threatened to move a no-confidence motion against BrihanMumbai Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta for allegedly 'disrespecting' the city's mayor, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday showered praise on him, saying he was doing a good job. The opposition Congress, on the other hand, has dared the Shiv Sena and asked the party to stop issuing warnings and to instead appeal Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for Mehta's removal.

BJP group leader Manoj Kotak told DNA: "MC is doing a good job. He broke the unholy nexus between contractors and the civic body staff. He also took action against erring contractors.''

Kotak was reacting to Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shevale's announcement that his party intended to move a 'no trust' motion against Mehta. The reason, repportedly, is that Mumbai mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar received a last-minute invitation for a cleanliness drive at civic body markets under the Swatch Bharat Mission in the presence of the chief minister. Mahadeshwar did not attend the function saying the commissioner had disrespected the office of the mayor.

Shevale, though, denied this was the reason for the Sena's dissatisfaction wih the civic body chief, adding that a decision would be taken after the meeting of party corporators slated for Monday.

''The no-confidence motion is being considered not on the issue of disrespect to the city mayor, but there are other issues such as the administration's lack of action to decide the fate of Deonar and Mulund dumping grounds. Besides, the number of development projects has also lost pace,'' he said.

Interestingly, the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee president Sanjay Nirupam stressed that Shiv Sena should approach the Chief Minister with an appeal to recall Mehta. NCP spokesman Nawab Malik asked the Sena to explain whether the party is looking to move the no-confidence motion against MC in the public interest or to protect their own interests.
