After announcing a change in the conventional method of electing a president in the corporation elections, which was councillors picking a candidate, the state BJP unit is having second thoughts now.

State ministers had decided to allow the public to vote for candidates contesting for the president's post. But having received negative feedback and unsure about the victory of their candidates, they are not in favour of it anymore.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had called the ministers for a meeting at his official residence Varsha in Malabar Hill area on Sunday to take the stock of the current political situation in Maharashtra.

"The cadres are completely demoralised. The corruption cases against our ministers is the main reason behind people having lost trust in our party. We apprised the CM of the ground reality and requested him to cancel the decision," said a senior BJP minister from North Maharashtra.

The state election commission has announced election of the 192 municipalities in state in November-December 2016.

Another minister told dna that the police department's confidential report is not also encouraging for the BJP. "As per the report, in the local body election, BJP's performance in Nagpur and its adjoining district will be good, while in Akola, Wardha and Buldhana, it will get decimated. Marathwada, Konkan and Thane report is in favour of the Shiv Sena. The NCP and Congress will perform well in Western Maharashtra, while North Maharashtra is also tilting towards the Sena and the NCP. Senior BJP leader Eknath Khadse's unceremonious removal from the cabinet will be a major factor for the party's dwindling support in North Maharashtra. There is now little scope to improve the party's image in public in the coming days. Everyday a new scam is hitting the party," said another minister.

President of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee Ashok Chavan said people are angry with the BJP for its anti-farmer and poor policy.

"The BJP had promised that after coming to power it will increase the minimum support price for crops as well as give 50% profit (to farmers). However, nothing has been done in the last two years. That's why people will vote for the Congress," Chavan said.
