BJP member of parliament (MP) Nana Patole said on Monday that he has decided to meet prime minister Narendra Modi to put forth the demand of amendment in the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Patole said according to the information from the Central home department, 95% of the atrocity cases were filed with mala fide intention. "In most cases, the atrocity charges were not proved. Therefore, we will meet the prime minister and ask him to bring the amendment in the Act," he said.

The leader further said that even before the Maratha morchas were held, he had raised the demand for the amendment in the parliament. "That time, not a single Maratha leader raised this issue. And today they are participating in the protest. We have also decided to request chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to meet the demands of the Marathas," Patole said.

He added, "We need the commission report to bolster the demand for reservation. The earlier government had appointed committees to support its stand on reservation. We need the commission report. Only after that can the Maratha reservation be implemented. We are not against Maratha reservation, but the OBC reservation should not cut be down and given to Marathas," Patole said.

The Maratha community members have been taking to the streets in large numbers to press for their demand of amendment in the Atrocity Act, capital punishment for Kopardi rape and murder accused, reservation for the community members and implementation of the Dr Swaminathan report. Patole said they will also request prime minister Narendra Modi to implement the Dr Swaminathan report, so that the farmers were able to get good price for their produce.

"We are committed to deliver on all promises," Patole said.

Meanwhile, a Maratha leader requesting anonymity said, "We have been protesting peacefully. People might have seen many protests, but the Maratha Kranti Morchas are quite different. Everyone is appreciating our model. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis should meet the demands to end the issue."
